I’m Michele DeKinder-Smith, and I’ve spent the last three years interviewing over 4,000 women business owners about their challenges and motivations. Along the way, I’ve learned a TON about what women want and need in order to be successful – and I’ve learned that, just like with our clothing, one size definitely does not fit all!
I’m thrilled that in our research we have uncovered that there are five unique types of women business owners and each type has a different motivation for owning a business. There’s:
- Accidental Jane – who wants that perfect balance of enough work to create her desired income, coupled with freedom to manage her work and time as she chooses
- Go Jane Go – who wants to make a powerful contribution and is so driven to do so, she has hardly any time for herself
- Jane Dough – a visionary, who loves the business of business and wants to create wealth by building a large, systematized organization
- Merry Jane – who wants maximum time flexibility while sharing her talents and expressing her creativity through a part-time or flexible-time business
- Tenacity Jane – who wants her business to be successful and is driven to succeed, though right now she’s struggling with cash flow and figuring out how to make the business produce the money she needs
Along my journey of understanding women business owners, I’ve had the chance to attend a lot of events. Great events, powerful events with really good content. BUT, what I often here from women is that, while they are inspired by the information they receive at these events, the really struggle with implementing when they get back to their offices. Why is that?
Because until and unless you really understand yourself and your business goals, you will attend conferences and events that sound like a good idea but simply will not work well to meet your unique business goals. You get filled with ideas, but the ideas aren’t necessarily right for YOU and YOUR business.
That’s why I’m delighted to host See Jane Succeed: LIVE! this coming May in Chicago, IL. How do I know all this?
Because, like you, I’m a woman business owner whose passionate about my businesses and my life. And though I’m now living in flow myself, it hasn’t always been this way. Soon after starting my own first business, I found myself $100,000 in credit card debt from my business. I was determined, I was learning a lot, I was Tenacity Jane. I figured out what it took to turn my life and my business around, and I was in flow – a happy Accidental Jane.
But later, my business got TOO busy! Sure I was making a ton of money, but I was working crazy hours, stressed out, overwhelmed and overweight from carrying the world on my shoulders. I was Go Jane Go on steroids. And then I got help and support, and I was back in flow.
In flow, inspiration comes and that’s when I realized I wanted to take my 20 years experience in conducting research and use it to help other women also get into (and stay in) flow. That prompted me to start my second company, Jane Out of the Box, which is dedicated to providing education, trusted resources, and networking and marketing opportunities to women business owners create the businesses and the lifestyles of their dreams. But to do that, you have to truly, deeply understand yourself and your needs so you can gather the right information and develop a plan that takes you exactly where you want to go right now, whether for you that looks like “having a nice, balanced life” or running a multi-million-dollar-plus empire.
